Details on the Atlanta trip.

Here's what's happening with the Atlanta trip:

We are going to Atlanta as planned on April seventh. A recent fundraising blitz did much better than I expected. This allows us to afford to hotel rooms in Atlanta and transportation.

Jack reserved a van for this trip last semester when we chose the date of April seventh, but the people with whom he reserved the van don't remember it anymore. This means that a bit of the trip money is going to be used to rent a van from Enterprise. This van is a little bit smaller than the vans we normally take; it only has eight seats. This means that most of the people who signed up will be able to fit on the van. There is another car going. Jack's wife is going to drive his kids, and she'll take the other students who can't fit on the van. Additionally, if anyone who's going is considering carpooling, that would be a great help. Please email me if you are carpooling.

We will be leaving at nine o'clock in the morning and driving for about eight hours. Bring whatever entertainment you'll need, but bring heeadphones; some have complained about the noise on the last trip. We will be staying Friday night and Saturday night. Then we'll Leave Sunday.

The hotel that Jack found is the Sheraton Midtown Atlanta at Colony Square. This is the same type of hotel we stayed at on the Washington trip. There will be three rooms. One will be for Jack and his family only. The other two rooms are for the rest of us. In concept this means one male room and one female room, but we can make any sleeping arrangements we want; Jack doesn't want to hear about it though. While in Atlanta We'll definitely see the High Museum. With Student discount it costs twelve dollars per person. We're also planing on seeing the contemporary museum which costs three dollars with student discount. The Museum of Design is free with a donation request. There are a lot of other cool places to look at as well. Bring about twenty dollars for all the museum stuff, and enough extra to ay for meals and anything else you may want to buy.

Art Wierd Designs, More Meetings

All Art Weird designs will be due on Wednesday March 22nd. We will also pick our favorites that day.

Also, Art Society will be meeting more frequently for the next few weeks. In anticipation of the upcoming trip to Atlanta, it has been suggested that we spend more time in meetings to get better prepared. I like this idea because it will also give more people the chance to come to the meetings. We will still be meeting every Wednesday at noon. In addition to that, we will be meeting at least once more. This coming week we will be meeting Monday, March 20th.

We saw this really cool mechanical sculpture. There were motors, wheels, chains and antlers everywhere. It was like Dr. Seuss took a shot at industrial design.

There was a long, boring wait before Fernando's show opened.

The first time I tried to put these pictures online the alignment was screwed up. That's what I get for being lazy and trusting the default html that blooger creates. This time I did the html by hand.

This is how the Great Charlotte flood of 2006 was started.

Jesus Christ I look stupid in this picture. Everyone else is looking at something Fernando is pointing at, and the wind is blowing my hair like I'm in a shampoo commercial.

This is a cool story. It seems that the students at Winthrope University get to draw on the walls around their studios. We found a doorway that was just a blank space with no door, so the three of us in this picture decided to draw them a door. After that we drew them a new Fire extinguisher, a new fire alarm, and an ATM. We assume that they appreciated it very much.

And finally we get to see Fernando's show! What's this Fernando? You're paint is still wet? We'll remember that next time you tell us to get our work done ahead of time.

The upcoming trip

To clear up any confusion, this post will explain in detail everything concerning this Friday's trip.

We will be going to see Fernando's show on Friday, February tenth. The van will leave Concord at eight o'clock in the morning. This will be a one-day trip; we will return to Concord Friday night. No one will need to bring sleeping bags, pillows, etcetera.

Though Jack Sheffler reserved both vans some time ago, we can only take one van. This is because we couldn't find a second driver. We initially asked Jamie Biggs, but he declined to drive the second van. For a long time we were hopeful that Hunt could drive the second van. He tried to rearrange his schedule, but he could not find a way. Fernando obviously can't do it because he's already going to be there. We never even bothered to ask Treadway; that seemed pointless. Students can't drive the Concord vans (they can't trust those fine machines to just anybody afterall) so that leaves us without anyone else in the art department to ask.

Jack told me just a few hours ago that he arrainged for one person with a big car to take some of us. If there is anyone else here who's willing to carpool, please let me know immediately.

If you signed up on the first list, I absolutely guarantee that you will have a spot on the van. Those of you who signed up on the second list, we are still trying to find ways for you to go. We haven't given up yet. We deffinitely have room for some of you.

Everyone going will need to cover their own expenses. Before seeing Fernando's show, we will be going to the Mint museums. This is two museums, and if you bring your student ID, you can get a ticket to both museums for a total of only five dollars. Again, that five dollars is enough to get you into both museums.

Show your work

When I was a kid I always hated the phrase "show your work" in math class, but this time around it means something a bit different.

If you're an art student at Concord University, please email me a few jpeg files of your latest and best work. Did you just finished a really cool drawing or painting? Let other art students see it and offer critiques. Are you a graduating senior who wants to drum up some excitement for your upcoming senior show? If so, this is a way to do it.

Send me pictures of art in any medium, but only students at Concord University (preferably Graphic Design or Studio Art majors) may apply.

Upcoming Art Society Events

Here's a quick list of things we have planned this semester:

Every Wednesday at noon we will have an Art Society meeting in the art building. The room number is FA203 I believe.
Friday, February 10, 2006 we will be going on a trip to see Fernando Porras's show. This will be a one day trip. If you are taking the van, be ready to leave at 8 AM. If you are planing on taking the van but haven't signed up, the sign up sheet is on Jack Sheffler's door. I'll make a more detailed post about this in the next few days.
We will be taking a trip to Atlanta on April 7th, 2006.
